Woody biochar potential for abandoned mine land restoration in the U.S.: a review

چکیده
Abstract There are thousands of abandoned mine land (AML) sites in the U.S. that need to be restored reduce wind and water erosion, provide wildlife forage, shade streams, improve productivity. Biochar created from woody biomass would normally burned slash piles can applied soil properties is one method restore AML productive capacity. Using this ‘waste’ for biochar reclamation activities will wildfire risk, air pollution burning, particulates released burning wood. has potential quality, bind heavy metals, or decrease toxic chemical concentrations, while improving health establish sustainable plant cover, thereby preventing leaching, other unintended, negative environmental consequences. forest residues create also helps improves resilience. We address concerns surrounding organic inorganic contaminants on how might affect its’ efficacy valuable information increase restoration AMLs using alone combination with amendments. Several examples initiated evaluate short- long-term above- belowground ecosystem responses presented.

Land Reclamation Natural Revegetation of 15 Abandoned Mine Land Sites in West Virginia
Fifteen AML sites ranging in age from 13 to 35 yr in Northern West Virginia were selected from three surface-mined coal beds (Pittsburgh, Freeport, and Kittanning) to evaluate plant invasion and establishment on disturbed sites. Three 10 m by 10 m plots were randomly located on each site, and cover, density, and stem diameter of all woody plant species were measured. Herbaceous and plant litter...

Article history: Received: 11.11.2014. Received in revised form: 4.2.2015. Accepted: 6.2.2015. The disposal of mine tailings is identified as one source of an environmental impact finally resulting in a typically degraded ecosystem. It can easily cause air and water pollution and is a source of man-made mudslides with high-potential socioeconomic-energy impacts. Pollution control and ecological...
متن کاملForest Restoration in Abandoned Agricultural Land: a Case Study from East Africa
Millions of hectares of tropical forests have been converted to agricultural land and abandoned, so it is important that we understand the process of forest recovery and comprehend how pathways are modified by different types of disturbance in different geographic regions. In a 4-year case study, we quantified the pattern of forest recovery following clearing and 3 years of cultivation of a moi...
متن کاملSustainable Development of Abandoned Mine Areas Using Renewable Energy Systems: A Case Study of the Photovoltaic Potential Assessment at the Tailings Dam of Abandoned Sangdong Mine, Korea
As mineral resources are depleted, most mines are typically abandoned and left unattended, resulting in serious social problems that impede sustainable development of these areas. The mining industry has recently introduced the use of renewable energy systems to solve the problems. This study assessed the photovoltaic (PV) potential of an abandoned mine tailings dam at the Sangdong mine in Sout...
